Judy McInnes awarded Paul Harris Fellowship

06 Nov, 2009 10:16 AM
Last week, the Rotary Club of Grenfell had the honour and pleasure of presenting a Paul Harris Fellowship to Judy McInnes.

Rotarians present this award to individuals whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objective of the Rotary Foundation, which is to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.

Past President Roma Sinclair was extremely pleased to have the opportunity to read the introductory information prior to the announcement.

“Once upon a time the novelist George Eliot wrote in one of her books ‘that the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and the fact that things are not so bad with you and me as they might have been, is partly owing to people who live faithfully an unsung life, but whose effect on those around them is incalculable’”, Roma said.

“Tonight, Grenfell Rotary is privileged to honour one of these faithful by awarding her a Paul Harris Fellowship, which means that, in her name, the Club has donated one thousand American dollars to the Rotary Foundation.

“Judy has such a long list of achievements, and every one has benefited the community which has been fortunate enough to have her as a member.

“She has been the Secretary of her Church, and the Church Organist for over 35 years. She has been the Secretary, and a continuing warm presence at the School her children attended, for over 25 years.

“She has done the bookwork, and been the Pay Officer, of the Community Health Centre. She was the Management Committee Treasurer at the Ken Hunter Lodge, and, to quote the Chairman of that Committee, whose letter I wish I could read in full, “she was responsible for calculating the staff wages, along with staff sick leave and long service leave etc, payment of all accounts, calculating Residents’ rental payments, all the Lodge banking, and overseeing the Lodge investments.

“As a result of her skill and dedication, over $400,000 was handed over to the President of the Senior Citizens committee to go towards the construction of new units.

“She is a Life Member of the Swimming Club, and its Treasurer for years, and, incidentally, an indisputable whiz at recalculating handicaps at the Business Houses Relays.

“She has a very true singing voice, proving, once again, the affinity which some mathematicians have for music.

“As well, she was a loving, caring wife to Bob (who was a member of this Club for a while), and is very affectionately remembered by all those who knew him, and a wonderful mother to John, Gary, Mark, Ian, Jennifer and ‘the beguiling and unforgettable Paul’, as one of his teachers described him.

“There’s an old Methodist hymn, long discarded from the hymn books, which goes “To give and give, and give again, what God hath given thee; To spend thyself nor count the cost, to serve right gloriously”, and that is what Judy McInnes has done, freely and instinctively, all her life.

President Jan McLelland, then presented the Paul Harris Fellow Award to Judy.

A large number of family and friends were present to share this momentous occasion. Sons Mark and Ian, and daughter Jenni (Unicomb) attended. John and Gary McInnes, Father Alan Crowe and Terry and Deidre Carroll were unable to be present on the evening.

Judy was absolutely thrilled and thanked Rotary for acknowledging her efforts over the years and expressed her appreciation to her family and friends for their support also throughout those years.
