One of the tour members is a doctor and she undertook several discussions with Bir Singh and with the current Medical Centre staff about what the most urgent equipment need is.
It ended up being a toss-up between a source of oxygen for patients and an Xray machine, items taken for granted in almost any Australian medical facility.
Any patient whose needs go beyond what the Medical Centre can provide will still need to be taken to Pokhara which involves being carried for seven hours along mountain trails and then taken 45 kms by vehicle. Helicopter retrieval is not an option for local people because of the cost involved.
While we were there a patient was brought in with a sprained ankle, carried an unknown distance by a relative “piggy-back”-style. It was a timely reminder of what we were there for.
Ang Sherpa, Chairman of the Kushudebu Public Health Mission, wrote as follows after receiving his half of your donations?.
